Water In Ramadan
The Significance of Water During Ramadan
As Muslims around the world embark on the sacred journey of Ramadan, fasting from dawn till dusk, the significance of water becomes even more profound. Ramadan is not only a time of spiritual reflection and devotion, but also a period where the importance of hydration is emphasized in both religious teachings and practical health guidelines.
In the Quran, water is frequently mentioned as a blessing from Allah SWT and a symbol of life and purity. In Surah Al-Anbya (21:30), Allah SWT says, “And We created from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?” This verse highlights the fundamental role of water in sustaining all forms of life, emphasizing its divine origin and significance.
Moreover, the Prophet Mohammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of water through his teachings and actions. He encouraged his followers to consume water before and after fasting to maintain hydration, as well as to break their fast with dates and water following his Sunnah.
Dehydration can lead to fatigue, weakness, and decreased productivity, hindering one’s ability to fully engage in acts of worship and reflection during this blessed month.
In addition to its physical benefits, water holds profound spiritual symbolism during Ramadan. It serves as a reminder of Allah’s mercy and provision, quenching not only physical thirst but also nourishing the soul with gratitude and humility. As Muslims break their fast with a sip of water, they are reminded of their dependence on Allah’s sustenance and the importance of gratitude for His blessings.
The Gift of Water
One of the most profound Hadiths regarding water is narrated by Sa’ad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), where the Prophet Mohammad ﷺ said, “The best charity is giving water to drink” (Abu Dawud). This Hadith underscores the immense reward and significance of providing access to clean water, especially in regions where water scarcity is a pressing issue.
In light of these teachings and the ongoing global water crisis, it is incumbent upon us to support initiatives that provide access to clean water, particularly in remote and underserved communities. Through organizations like Muslim Welfare Canada (MWC), we can make a tangible impact by donating towards the construction of water wells and hand pumps in regions facing water scarcity, such as remote areas of Pakistan.
MWC’s “Build a Water Well/Hand Pump” campaign aligns perfectly with the spirit of Ramadan, offering a means to fulfill the prophetic guidance of providing water as a Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). By donating $500 for a Hand Pump or $1500 for a Water Well, you can help alleviate the suffering of communities deprived of this basic necessity. The campaign also provides an option for small recurring donations that will eventually culminate in the construction of a well or hand pump on their behalf.
Together, let us fulfill the prophetic injunction to provide water as charity and make a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in need. May our efforts be blessed and accepted during this sacred month of Ramadan. Ameen.
