Attain spiritual ascension through your duaas this Ramadan

“There is nothing dearer to Allah than a servant making dua to Him,” according to our Beloved Messenger ﷺ (Sahih al-Jami). And what better month to turn to our Creator in sincere supplication than the blessed month of Ramadan, when we are striving to attain His pleasure?

Moreover, our Prophet ﷺ has said that the duas of a fasting person when breaking their fast is not rejected by Allah. (Tirmidhi)

While we may feel loss for words, or unable to articulate ourselves during supplication from time to time, Ramadan is too precious of a month to be squandered with our inability to plead to Allah for ourselves, our loved ones and the Ummah facing immense trials around the world.

To help you through your journey of dua this month, we have provided some simple tips and Prophetic etiquette and supplications.

Practical Tips When Making Dua

The best way to maximize your duas in Ramadan is to be ready:

• Create a list of duas and separate them by headings if necessary.

• Make them readily available: Create a notebook, put them on dua cards, or post-it notes around you so you can easily access them.

• Make them a regular part of your routine – say them after prayer, when waking up and before falling asleep, or getting in your car, so they easily roll off your tongue and become habitual.

How to Approach Dua

Dua is an essential part of worship, and our Messenger ﷺ taught us the best way to approach supplication. Some of the etiquettes he has advised us of are as follows:

  • Supplicating only to Allah, in a state of obedience to Him and avoiding that which He has forbidden.

  • Maintain sincerity in asking Allah and Him alone.

  • Calling upon Allah by His most beautiful names.

  • Imploring Him using the powerful names He has chosen to reveal to us.

  • Sending peace and salutations upon the best of creation, our Beloved Messenger ﷺ.

  • Turning towards the Qiblah.

  • Having certainty that Allah will respond to your supplication.

  • Asking Allah often and not becoming impatient in waiting for your duas to be answered, nor abandoning hope.

  • Being firm in our language when asking Allah; not being ashamed to ask for what you want, nor thinking that your matters are too insignificant before Him.

  • Maintaining humility, hope and fear when calling upon our Creator.

  • Asking for yourself and asking for others.

Here a few duas we are taught for the month of Ramadan. These are short and easy to remember and can help orient you in your supplications this month:

Dua for Relief from Anxiety

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal’ajzi walkasali, walbukhli waljubni, wa dhala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal.

O Allah, I take refuge in you from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men.

May Allah accept all of your Duas, and may your supplication be a means by which you draw nearer to our Creator and attain spiritual ascension this month. Do not overlook the power Dua as it is one of the believer’s most potent weapons in seeking the help and Mercy of Allah, the Owner of Absolute Sovereignty.

“When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way.” (2:186)
